Parish Nurse Update: August 28, 2011

The recommended adult immunization schedule for ages 19 to 65+ from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists, and the American College of Physicians (2/2011) is as follows: 

1.) 19yrs. to 26 yrs.-- HPV Vaccine (Human Papillomavirus Vaccine) 3 doses (Females) if not vaccinated previously. Vaccine is recommended to prevent cervical precancers and cancers in females.

2.)19yrs. to 49yrs-- MMR Vaccine (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) 1-or-2 doses if not previously vaccinated or lab results show no immunity. Adults born before 1957 are considered immune to measles and mumps. 

3.) 19yrs. to 64 yrs.--Td/Tdap Vaccine (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis vaccine) Substitute 1 time dose of Tdap for Td booster: then Td booster every 10 years. 65+ yrs.-- Td booster every 10 years.

4.) 19 yrs. to 65+ yrs.—Influenza Vaccine – annually. Varicella Vaccine –2 doses if no evidence of immunity and not previously vaccinated.

5.) 60yrs. and older—Herpes Zoster (Shingles) Vaccine –1 time dose 6.) 65+yrs Pneumococcal Vaccine –1 time dose. As always discuss these vaccinations with your Dr. / NP to develop your own individualized immunization schedule.
